If you’ve followed my coverage of smartwatches, you might already be aware of my previous reviews regarding Mobvoi’s TicWatch models. The TicWatch line is distinctive compared to most other watches due to its dual-display technology, which offers impressive battery life and unique functionalities.
Shifting gears from watches, Mobvoi has just unveiled a new device: the TicNote, an advanced AI-powered voice recorder that connects to your smartphone and leverages AI software to generate content from your voice notes.
This compact gadget weighs only 71 grams and is roughly the size of three stacked credit cards. It features a substantial 470 mAh battery that enables up to 25 hours of usage, along with 64GB of storage capable of holding 434 hours of voice recordings. Here’s what it has to offer.
Upon unboxing the TicNote, I initially thought this small, straightforward device would have limited capabilities. It comes with a single switch to toggle between recording voice notes and capturing phone calls from the receiver, although Bluetooth calls are not supported. Additionally, there is a small OLED display to show the device’s current status and a power button to initiate and halt recording sessions.
While I was exploring the button functions, my wife entered my office and began discussing sinus infections and allergies. To our surprise, the TicNote was actively listening, and later, we were amazed by the results it generated in the app. Once a conversation is recorded, the device can transmit the audio file via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, depending on the size of the file.
The TicNote’s three built-in MEMS microphones offer a recording range of 10 meters, and the clarity of the recordings from such a distance was quite impressive. To enhance the ease of recording phone calls, a MagSafe-compatible case is included so that it can be mounted on your phone’s back.
The recordings are obtained through TicNote’s hardware, and while that aspect works seamlessly, the true magic occurs when you sync those recordings to your smartphone and open the TicNote application. It’s also possible to start and stop recordings directly through the TicNote app; if the device is off, tapping record on your phone will activate the TicNote and begin recording.
By selecting one of the recordings in the list, you can view a summary, transcript (differentiating between speakers), Aha moments, deep research insights, and a mind map of the recording. The effective summaries encompass overviews, specifics, and even a task list, all of which have proven to be incredibly accurate and helpful. You can export audio files, transcripts, summaries, and the mind map if you wish to share your findings. It would also be beneficial if there was future support for exporting task lists.
Although the results I’ve observed over the last few days have been quite precise, you can modify the summary in case of any inaccuracies. Furthermore, you can translate it into another language and re-transcribe after making edits. All data collected by the TicNote is stored on Mobvoi’s cloud infrastructure located in the U.S.
Aha moments present insights derived from your transcribed voice recordings. For instance, when my wife and I were discussing allergies and sinus infections, the Aha moment highlighted recent medical findings regarding the safety of Afrin and Benadryl. This information was highly beneficial and even provided source links to confirm the details shared in TicNote.
The TicNote application incorporates several additional functions, such as organizing your files into project folders, searching through your recordings, utilizing the Shadow AI agent, among others. Within each project folder, you can add recordings, local files (like PDFs, text files, and Word documents), random thoughts, and in-depth research reports.
The TicNote hardware is quite powerful, and the app delivers excellent information. However, that information might come at a cost; to clarify how many credits you will require, Mobvoi is offering early purchasers three months of the Pro subscription for free. This Pro subscription includes 1,500 credits each month, available for a monthly fee of $12.99 or an annual subscription of $79.99. Most features utilize one credit per session or minute. Even without subscribing to the Pro plan, you’ll still receive 300 free credits monthly.
Our purchasing recommendation
From the discussion I had with my wife, we were amazed by the ability of TicNote to transform audio from a conversation into meaningful content. The Mobvoi TicNote AI-based voice recorder is a small and lightweight accessory that could revolutionize how you take meeting notes, capture great ideas, compile task lists, create shopping lists, and research topics of interest. I would suggest it to anyone in search of a new AI-powered assistant that recognizes the value of voice notes.
